Do you have a project proposal or a research question that WIPS could help you with?

The Welsh Institute of Performance Science aims to answer performance-driven questions through applied research. We recognise that the best ideas and solutions come from anyone and that diversity in teams is proven to contribute to enhanced research and performance. When developing your project ideas and completing your expression of interest, please consider the extent to which your proposed project and research team supports diversity and inclusion and aligns to the 3 key themes; athlete health and wellbeing, athlete development and athlete environments.

The Benefits

Athlete Health and Wellbeing

Athlete health and wellbeing is essential for long-term performance. We believe in supporting both physical and mental wellbeing by understanding athletes as people, not just performers. We want to ensure that athletes are supported to train and perform to their potential, in a sustainable, and psychological safe manner. The goal is to embed a culture that prioritises health and wellbeing, enhancing performance and supporting athletes throughout and beyond their sporting journeys.

Athletic Development

Athletic development is the systematic process of enhancing an athlete’s physical, technical, tactical, and psychological abilities to support long-term performance. It underpins sporting success by helping athletes adapt, progress, and perform at their best. We aim to equip all performance pathway athletes with the tools to reach their potential, through collaboration that is centred on six key areas: movement skills, strength, energy systems, nutrition, testing and monitoring, and psychological development.

Athlete Environments

Creating performance environments where Welsh athletes can thrive in sport and life, making success and personal growth more achievable. This occurs through our ‘Thriving Environments Framework’, by gathering insight into athlete experiences, and using research and the athlete voice to guide improvements. Key priorities include fostering psychological safety, empowering environments and supporting positive cultures, particularly around transitions.

"Collaborating with the Welsh Institute of Performance Science allows us to tap into a strong academic community in Wales to create practical solutions to help our athletes excel on the world stage"
