Athlete health and wellbeing is a fundamental prerequisite for performance — not just in the short-term, but throughout an athlete’s entire sporting journey.

Our Health and Wellbeing theme provides expert support to help shape a thriving environment where athletes are supported to train and perform to their potential, in a sustainable, and psychologically safe manner.

We recognise that to engender athlete health and wellbeing, and facilitate optimal athlete and performance outcomes, the focus must be holistic. That is, we support the athlete’s physical and mental wellbeing— by understanding who they are, both as a performer and as a person. This approach is essential for enhancing individual and team performance through improving athlete health and wellbeing across the Welsh sporting performance system.

We use a scientific, evidence based and theoretically informed approach to this work, by collaborating closely with our partners across the performance system. This ensures we identify and address the factors that influence athlete health and wellbeing.

By understanding the systemic challenges of being involved in sporting performance pathways, we aim to build a culture where health and wellbeing is not only supported but actively prioritised and protected—enabling athletes to thrive both in and beyond sport.

"Collaborating with the Welsh Institute of Performance Science allows us to tap into a strong academic community in Wales to create practical solutions to help our athletes excel on the world stage"
